9 suspects have been arrested for the collapse of the bridge that killed 134 people in India
Indian police have arrested nine people in connection with Sunday’s catastrophic bridge collapse that killed 134 people, including maintenance staff and contractors.
A pedestrian suspension bridge built in Gujarat in 1877 reportedly collapsed across the Machhu River due to overcrowding. The bridge had just reopened a week ago after months of repairs.
About 500 people were present on the bridge when the support cables failed. According to officials, the bridge could only support itself about 125 people.
Additionally, CCTV footage of the bridge shows a group of youths deliberately swinging the bridge before it collapses into the river below. Ashwin Mehra, who survived the bridge collapse, reportedly witnessed the group swinging the bridge.
“There were about 15-20 boys aged 20-25 who were shaking the bridge,” he said. is quoted. “…Three times we heard some sounds, and the sixth time the cable (of the bridge) suddenly broke.”
Those arrested in connection with the bridge collapse include two managers of Oreva, the manufacturing company contracted to repair the bridge, as well as two ticket sellers, three security guards and two contractors responsible for maintaining the structure.

According to a senior police official, arrests are likely in the future.
