Advantages and disadvantages of in-flight baggage screening
The hotly debated topic among air travelers often has certain pros and cons to any argument. For first-time travelers or people who just need a refresher, there are certain restrictions on what items you can put in your carry-on (things you can take with you on the plane) and what you can ‘check-in’ ” (things that go in the cargo compartment of your plane, under the cabin floor).
Reasons to carry your bags in the cabin
The airline is responsible for your bags, so they won’t get lost. Perhaps the worst problem for travelers is the loss of their luggage. In the event that this happens, the carrier will compensate you in the smallest way possible, such as delivering your bag to your hotel or home hours or days after you lost your luggage.
Once you reach your destination, you can cross the airport and see your rental car, taxi or shuttle without having to wait for your luggage to appear at the baggage carousel.
If your flight is ever delayed or canceled and you miss your connecting flight, your luggage is with you, making you more flexible. There may be another flight you can be rerouted to, or one that flies to a nearby airport. Note that when you check in your baggage, it will remain on the scheduled flight (as a general rule), even if the flight is delayed by hours and you are rebooked on another flight. The airline will simply send your bag on the original flight, requiring you to stay at your destination or return to the airport when the flight arrives (such a disappointment!).
Another advantage is the fact that you can always keep an eye on your personal belongings, thus eliminating the possibility of your camera malfunctioning after being slipped into the cargo hold by a man who used to work on a construction site shoveling concrete. bag, or even worse – disappeared on the way to the airport of arrival.
Reasons to check your luggage
You can take more things with you. Airlines limit the items you can carry on board the plane. So you need to know how to pack wisely (note: don’t bring the kitchen sink). If you’re only going to be away for a few days, it’s best to carry your luggage on board the flight. However, if you plan to bring a lot of gifts and goodies with you, it’s best to check in your luggage. Refer to Checked Baggage Limits.
You no longer have to fight 150 other people for the elusive overhead bin space (the area above your seat that looks an inch smaller than your bag). Most business travelers take shorter trips, so they don’t need to check in luggage plus they have the advantage of boarding before other passengers. Chances are the overhead bins will be occupied by the time you board the plane, and probably the only seat available is above 47E in the back, away from your seat in 10A (meaning you have to wait for all passengers to disembark at the destination airport to pick up your bag at the baggage claim counter).
