Attack on UK immigration center ‘terrorist’ incident, police say | news
The bombing of a recycling center in an English town was “motivated by terrorist ideology”, police say.
British police have said last week’s petrol bomb attack on an immigration center in Dover was motivated by far-right ideology.
No one was seriously injured on October 30 incident in the southern English port city, and police said 66-year-old Andrew Leake, who was found dead at a nearby service station shortly after the attack, appeared to have acted alone.
“Counter-Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) … found evidence to suggest that the attack on the Dover Immigration Center on Sunday 30 October 2022 was motivated by terrorist ideology,” the organization said on Saturday.
“There is currently nothing to suggest that the offender was working alongside anyone else and it is not believed that there is a wider threat to the public,” police said in a statement.
Tim Jacques, senior national counter-terrorism coordinator, added that while there were “strong indications that mental health is likely to be a factor”, he concluded that “the suspect’s actions were largely motivated by extremist ideology”.
These have reached “the threshold of a terrorist incident”, he said.
IEDs were thrown at the Western Jet Foil Border Force center in Dover on Sunday, leaving two staff with minor injuries.
Dover immigration facility is the first stop for thousands of people who have made the perilous journey across the English Channel to seek asylum in the UK.

The government’s Home Affairs Select Committee was told on October 26 that an unprecedented 38,000 people have made the perilous journey since the start of the year.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Britain was a compassionate and welcoming place for asylum seekers, but it depended on the country being able to effectively control its borders.
UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman sparked outrage earlier this week, and was rebuked by the new UN rights chief, as the arrivals were described as: “invasion”.
