Dooney and Bourke Handbags – Made in USA or China?
Dooney and (&) Bourke handbags were once a staple of American quality and fashion, but like many other fashion designers, have gone down the path of cheaper manufacturing through Chinese labor. And this can create a lot of confusion for the buyer. A shopper buys a Dooney bag, takes it home, throws it over her shoulder, and looks great! He then peeks inside and starts fiddling with the interior zippers, etc. and comes across a tiny label that says these three little words: Made in China. What? Dooney has to be made in the USA, right? The shopper then begins to panic, assuming she’s been duped by a fake bag. But it’s actually an authentic Dooney and it’s made in China.
So for the record, a D&B that says made in China does not mean it’s a fake bag. Many of the newer bags are made in China. However, vintage D&B bags must be made in the USA. Coach also made this change from the US to China.
What about fakes?
After checking where the bag is made, check the piping. The edging refers to the rounded edges of the bag and this feature will be high quality leather. The seam lines associated with the edging will also be of high quality. There should be no crooked or uneven seam lines along the edge of the edged leather. Any evidence of sloppy and rushed seam lines resulting in unstable or asymmetrical seams is a major red flag.
Always check the hardware. Dooney & Bourke uses high quality brass for all of their metal accents. A good way to check hardware for authentic or fake brass is to look closely for evidence of silver areas. This would represent a nickel in many cases. This is a cheap metal used by counterfeiters that is colored to look like brass and copy the authentic brass that Dooney would apply. Authentic brass will have an aged look, while fake brass will have a shiny, cheap looking look.
These are some quick steps you can take to weed out some of the fakes and are not a complete guide to all the advice you need, but will provide some insulation from many of the fakes on the viral market. Good luck and safe shopping!
