Executive Protection – Go it alone

Executive Protection – Go it alone

It is difficult to obtain a long-term executive protection (EP) contract as an individual operator. However, it is not that difficult to set up an EP company. If you have the experience, training and knowledge, then you can create an EP company – a company that is fully committed to providing the best protection to its clients. Before you decide to go out on your own, here are some important tips on how to get started:

• Get properly licensed in your state to start an EP company.

• Choose a name for your record company that is unique and not trademarked or copyrighted.

• Get a business license or legal entity.

• Go to a bank and find a business bank account (savings and checking).

• Get a printed business card with the name of your EP company and your name and title (Managing Director).

• Cash in the bank to cover your EP costs before they are reimbursed by the client. Initially, you paid the daily expenses while working; this includes airfare, hotel, food and transportation.

• If you are just starting out or are an experienced EP professional; you must have an EP contract. Your EP contract protects you and your company and prevents fraud. Hire a lawyer to draft a professional and legal EP contract exclusively for your company.

• It is not unusual to receive a $5,000 reimbursement when you are staying at five-star hotels and are forced to eat an expensive meal at the hotel restaurant with your client. Not to mention flying business class when traveling with the client. You should be able to cover all of this in cash or credit.

• Congratulations, you now own your own EP company. Now is the time to create your own success as an EP company business owner.

You must be willing to put in the effort to create, promote, market and sell your EP services. Competition in the industry is high, so you need to make the services you provide great as well. When you’re first starting out, you should take assignments as often as possible and in as many different locations (different cities and countries) as possible. Ultimately, you can become more selective about which clients you work with in person and in which locations. Simply assign your other agents to work with those clients and in those locations that you chose not to, but that should be done later.

In the beginning, you cannot afford to miss out on the opportunity for EP assignments working with different clients and locations, gaining additional work experience and funding for your EP business. Although the EP business is not all about the money, you must be willing to put yourself at risk as a last resort in protecting your clients. However, making a living as the owner of your own EP company should eventually give you the luxury of being able to afford to do what I love, executive protection, without having to worry about money.

Good EP company owners will enter into EP contracts. You may have to go to several different contract interviews before you get hired, but if you go to enough interviews, you will eventually get a contract with your EP company. Don’t take “No” for an answer; don’t let a “No” from one company destroy your chances of getting a contract from another company. Prospects will sometimes say no to your contract offer. You just have to find customers who say “Yes”.

Remember that the EP business is extremely competitive and you need to believe in yourself and the coverage you provide. This of course includes arranging secure accommodation for the client, VIP or expedited immigration and customs clearance at the airport, secure transportation for clients so that they can proceed expeditiously yet safely to their scheduled business meetings and functions. Ensure in advance that routes are analyzed and site destinations are assessed and that safe havens are established in the event that excrement makes physical contact with the fan.

There are many more things you need to know about business that cannot fit in this short article, but these are the most important things. Good luck in your EP business venture and Divine Speed.
