An official investigation cleared Sanna Marini of abuse leaked video showing the 36-year-old Finnish prime minister lavishly dancing and drinking with friends and celebrities made headlines around the world.

Multiple complaints to the parliamentary ombudsman claimed that excessive drinking at a party in August would render Marin, the world’s youngest head of government when he was elected in 2019, unable to carry out his official duties.

However, Finland’s Chancellor of Justice, an independent office responsible for overseeing the legality of ministerial actions to which any citizen can file a complaint, concluded that he had not neglected his duties.

“There was no reason to suspect the Prime Minister of illegal conduct or neglect of official duties in the performance of his duties,” Justice Chancellor Tuomas Poisty wrote in his ruling.

Complaints against the chancellor also claimed that his behavior was unbecoming of a prime minister and that he had undermined Finland’s “authority and security”.

Poisty said the complaints did not detail what the prime minister allegedly failed to do, or what tasks he might not have been able to do if called upon to do so, and that he could only assess “specific situations.”

on time Marin told reporters he was “upset” that the footage, which he knew was being filmed but thought would remain secret, had been released. “I spent the evening with my friends, organized parties, even noisy ones, danced and sang,” he said.

Amid unsubstantiated reports that drugs may have been consumed, he denied ever drinking and tested negative. “I am a human being. And I also sometimes want joy and light and fun in these dark clouds.” he said later.

The chancellor also addressed individual complaints photo taken during a party at the Prime Minister’s residence showing model and influencer Sabina Sarkke and another woman, not Marie, kissing and lifting their shirts.

Poisty said his duties were limited to making judgments about the legality of ministers’ actions and it was not his job to assess the “moral and social” dimensions of the prime minister’s leisure activities or their trust and confidence.

Such issues are “the parliament’s problem,” he said, adding that political accountability “is regularly weighed in democratic elections as well.” The Prime Minister’s official residence can be used for private events, he said.

Marin’s critics and political opponents argued that her behavior was inappropriate, reckless and irresponsible, saying her choice of friends showed a lack of judgment and that the published photos and videos could expose her to criticism or even blackmail.

His many supporters, including women who posted videos of themselves dancing – defended his party right. The Prime Minister himself said that he hopes that “in 2022 it is accepted that even decision-makers can dance, sing and go to parties”.

He said that voters in the elections should assess whether his behavior “is appropriate from their point of view and what they think about it”.
