From “blah, blah, blah” to “greenwashing, lying and cheating”. why isn’t Greta going to COP27?

Greta Thunberg is not going to COP27.

The Swedish climate activist has become one of the most prominent faces at the annual UN climate summit in recent years.

He has been to every COP since school strikes in 2018 at the age of 15 brought him to the forefront of the youth activist climate movement.

He was at COP24 in Poland, COP25 in Spain and last year COP26 In Glasgow, where he memorably criticized leaders’ promises as “blah blah blah”.

Distance is not an obstacle. swearing flying due to its climate emissions, Thunberg sailed a zero-carbon yacht to New York for the 2019 Climate Action Summit.

But Sharm El-Sheikh is a long way from being a “tourist paradise in a country that violates basic human rights,” he says.

Why are human rights activists unhappy that Egypt is hosting the COP?

Speaking at the London Literature Festival, where she was promoting her new book, the 19-year-old activist dismissed the upcoming climate summit as an opportunity for “people in power… [use] greenwashing, lying and cheating.”

The conferences, he adds, “are not really meant to change the whole system,” but instead encourage incremental progress.

“As it is, COPs don’t really work, unless of course we use them as an opportunity to mobilize.”

Other campaigners and social activists echoed similar sentiments.

For The InterceptNaomi Klein wrote that “If last year’s summit in Glasgow was blah, blah, blah, its meaning, even before it has begun, is clearly more ominous.

“This summit is about blood, blood, blood. The blood of about 1,000 protesters butchered by Egyptian forces to secure power for its current ruler. The blood of those who continue to be killed. The blood of those beaten in the streets and tortured in prisons, often executed.”

While Klein notes that Egyptian activists have not called on the climate movement to boycott the event, he laments the lack of solidarity and focus on Egypt. Human rights the situation so far.

Public demonstration is effectively banned in Egypt, and restrictions on activist accreditation and attendance badges have previously been a point of contention. UN climate summits.

“The space for civil society will be too limited,” adds Greta. “It’s important to leave space for those who need to be there. It will be difficult for activists to make their voices heard.”

Thunberg is one of hundreds of signatories who have signed a mediation by a human rights coalition calling on Egyptian authorities to open civilian space and “release all arbitrarily detained”.

What is “Greta’s The Climate Book” about?

At Sunday’s event, Greta denounced the “sustainability crisis” as a “crisis of lack of access to information”.

Her book includes explanatory articles from more than 100 climate experts, including renowned climatologists Catherine Hayhoe and Michael manas well as such authors as Margaret Atwood.

“I wanted it to be educational, which is a little ironic because my thing is school strikes,” he said.

Asked to comment on recent protests Just Stop Oil activists who were seen throwing soup at Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers at the National Gallery in London, Thunberg said. “People are trying to find. new methods because we realize that what we have been doing until now has not succeeded.

“It’s only reasonable to expect these kinds of different actions.”
