History of hydraulic jacks
Hydraulic jacks are widely used around the world. They are of great importance in the present age as they have made an incredible contribution in making our life much more convenient than it used to be. These jacks were superior to the conventional screw jacks that were in use at one time. They consist of two cylinders connected together. It works on the principle of Pascal’s law, which suggests that when there is an increase in pressure at any point in a container of liquid, there is an equal increase in pressure at every other point in the container.
History
The origin of hydraulic jacks can be dated back several years when Richard Dudgeon, the owner and inventor of hydraulic jacks, established a machine shop. In 1851 he received a patent for his hydraulic jack. In 1855, he literally amazed onlookers in New York when he traveled from his residence to his workplace in a steam carriage. It made a very strange noise which disturbed the horses, and so its use was confined to one street. Richard stated that his invention had the power to carry about 10 men on one barrel of anthracite coal at a speed of 14 miles per hour. Dudgeon deserves special credit for his numerous inventions, including roller boiler tube expanders, filter press jacks, drag jacks, hydraulic heavy plate punches, and various types of lifting jacks.
Common types
Floor Jacks: These jacks are primarily used to lift heavy equipment from the floor surface. It is more often used to change tires on vehicles. The floor jack is known by various names such as garage jack and car jack. Nowadays, you can find more powerful jacks on the market that use hydraulic power for maximum lifting.
Hydraulic Bottle Jacks: Hydraulic bottles are versatile as they can be placed in tight spaces and provide good leverage. They have a longer handle than other hydraulic jacks and push up against a lever that raises the main lift arm. With their use, it is possible to give a greater stroke lift. They are widely used in the construction of buildings and the repair of house foundations. It has also been found to be very useful in search and rescue operations.
Long Jacks: Simply put, this is a hydraulic jack with a long dimension. Its handle is quite easy to use. It is mainly used for carrying out various types of repair work.
Shop for press jacks: These are of great use in press work where there is a need to generate huge pressure with minimal effort.
Another popular form of jack that enjoys high demand in the market is the Porta Power Jack.
