A mother seeks advice after an argument with her ex-husband over their daughter’s weight.
A mother wants to send their overweight daughter to a sports camp that will help her reach a healthy weight.
However, her ex-husband opposes the idea, believing that the daughters are sending the wrong message sending her to “fat camp”.
She wants to send her daughter to a sports camp to help her maintain her weight after gaining a lot after her parents’ divorce.
Publishing her story on subreddit, r/AmItheA–-holethe woman asked other Redditors if she made a mistake in her decision.
She began her post by revealing that her 14-year-old daughter Abby, who she shares with her ex-husband, had just reached 210 pounds.
The teenage girl gained a lot of weight when the woman’s divorce from her ex-husband was finalized.
“Growing up, Abby was always an average weight until we split custody,” the woman wrote.
While the woman and her ex were still married, she said she did most of the grocery shopping and cooking for the family to make sure they ate a balanced diet.
He admits that Abby was struggling with the divorce, but she started going to therapy where she seemed to be doing well.
Her weight increased when she started going to her father half the time.
“At first I just thought she was gaining weight before her growth spurt, but it wasn’t like that,” the woman wrote.
She claimed that her ex-husband only fed their daughter “junk food” when she was staying with him.
“He doesn’t cook and it’s worse if you eat it on your plate,” the woman wrote. “So, in short, he’s giving her way to big portions of shit.”
The woman spoke to her ex-husband about the issue and asked him if he could give their daughter smaller portions, but she says he “won’t give up.”
In an attempt to deal with Abby’s weight, the woman got her involved in sports.
“He mostly enjoys it, but that’s not enough stop weight gain,” she wrote.
The worried mother spoke to a doctor and a nutritionist about Abby’s weight gain, both of whom blamed the woman’s ex-husband for feeding her unhealthy amounts of food.
Running out of options, the woman decided to send Abby to soccer camp on the days she was supposed to stay with her father to control her weight.
“Abby seemed to go along with the idea and this way her dad won’t be feeding her or seeing her for the next few months,” the woman wrote.
Although when the woman informed her ex-husband about sending Abby to the camp, he did not agree with the decision.
“It was a big fight that he rounded up to its weight. He accused me of sending her to a fat camp, the woman said.
She added that she is talking to lawyers to modify their custody agreement so she can monitor Abby’s weight and ensure she stays healthy.
Many Redditors agreed with the woman’s decision and criticized her ex-husband for what he is doing to their daughter.
“What the father is doing is abuse. forcing the child to overeat”, pointed out one user. “If he won’t budge, I suggest you work with doctors and lawyers and change custody so he doesn’t cause long-term health problems for your child.”
“He’s also wrong when he calls football camp ‘fat camp,'” another user commented. “That OP is great [original poster] found an activity that her daughter enjoys and is a healthy way to become more active.”
“My first thought when I read the title was ‘ugh!’ but Abby loves sports and it’s not even ‘fat camp’ so if she wants to go, that should be all that matters,” another user added.
