Why Panasonic?
Not only the intelligent high-definition image, the remote control, the number and range of sockets such as HDMI and USB played an equal role in my choice.
Resolution vs Screen Size:
Most LED/LCD TVs on the market today (December 2012) suffer from significant resolution distortion after going from 47 inches to 55 inches. I was originally shopping for a 55-inch 3D HD LED, but settled on a 47-inch TV because of the much sharper picture quality. There are good 55-inch plus TVs out there, but they come at a price point well beyond my modest budget.
Panasonic remote control and touchpad:
HDMI CEC – Consumer Electronics Control, for me this is an important feature when choosing and why I ended up switching from cheaper brands to Panasonic. CEC allows one remote to control all devices connected via HDMI – such as Blu-ray Disc players, PVR, Home Theater, etc.
The remote control is one of the best I’ve come across so far, Fast switching between channels and most modalities, flipping back and forth has very little lag time. Please note that the TV’s built-in native internet takes about 30 seconds to load, but switches back to TV and other modes in an instant. Having both a conventional remote and touchpad included in the price/package is a real bonus.
Less expensive models and shopping online:
Always review the product before buying online or you may be disappointed. Poor screen resolution and gross pixelation is a common problem with some cheaper brands and models, something that can only be discovered through personal evaluation. Flat panel devices with low resolution and large blocky pixels should be avoided at all costs.
Lesser known brands I looked at:
HISENSE – HDMI CEC was missing
TCL – No HDMI CEC
NUOVO – Good value for money (Supermarket – Only smaller sizes)
KOGAN – Cannot see working model.

Why I chose to shop online:
Faster, cheaper and in the case of BBB free shipping.
My original intention was to buy local, but this has its drawbacks – the main one being that I usually walk out the door with something different than my original intention.
Professionals:
The crystal clear picture for both free-to-air and PC picture via HDMI is nothing short of amazing (Obviously this depends on the source being in HD). Internet programs like Google Earth take on a whole new dimension when viewed on this 47-inch Panasonic screen.
4 HDMI and 2 USB ports are very convenient, if you plug a keyboard into the USB plug, you will find it works when you are in internet mode.
Cons:
Capture Recording – One Touch Recording will only play back on the specific Panasonic TV it was recorded from. I suspect this could easily be overcome by adding a separate PVR BOX, but a bit annoying to say the least.
Native and Extended Warranties:
It is important to check as many warranty details as possible before purchasing, there are questionable product insurers out there, I have been caught out twice already, both related to large well known international brands and retailers, I eventually settled both claims, but the situation was annoying and the warranty covered resolving one tv took the best part of 6 months.

Outstanding – 4.5 out of 5 stars
Much better than I expected, a very pleasant surprise. I took off half a star due to the restrictive entry issue. I suspect other major brands will soon have similar recording policies, if they don’t already, they are designed to protect film ownership rights. The remote control and touchpad are real winners with performance well above all expectations.
