KATHMANDU, Reuters – A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal early on Wednesday, killing at least six people, destroying scores of homes in the western Doti district and shaking the Indian capital New Delhi, officials said.

Five more people were seriously injured when eight houses collapsed, said Bhola Bhatta, deputy superintendent of police in Doti, confirming earlier figures shared by home ministry official Tulsi Rijal.

Local media showed mud and brick homes destroyed by the quake and rescue workers digging through the rubble to search for survivors. At least two people are missing, Nepal Army spokesman Narayan Silwal said.

Nepal is still recovering from two major earthquakes in 2015 that killed almost 9,000 people, destroyed entire cities and centuries-old temples and took a $6 billion hit to the economy. Doti is located about 430 km (270 mi) west of the capital, Kathmandu.

Eyewitness Ram Upadhyay, village head of Purbi Chowki in Doti district, said he was in a nearby village when the quake hit at 2:12 a.m. Nepal time. ‚ÄúThere was a terrible shock and I immediately got out. We are now gathering details, including the bodies.”

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, writing on Twitter, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “I have instructed the relevant departments to organize immediate and proper treatment of the victims and victims.

A ground rescue team from the Nepalese army rushed to the scene, spokesman Silwal said, and two helicopters were stationed in the nearby towns of Surkhet and Nepalgunj.

Kalpana Shrestha, a senior bureaucrat in Doti district, said details were being gathered from villages near the epicenter and that a child was among those who survived the rubble.

The Nepal Seismological Center registered an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) assessed the earthquake as having a magnitude of 5.6.

The quake’s epicenter was 158 km (100 miles) northeast of Pilihit, a town in India’s neighboring Uttar Pradesh state, and struck at a depth of 10 km, EMSC added.

After the quake, media reported that tremors were also felt in New Delhi and surrounding areas, about 350 km (220 miles) from Doti.
