Starting a club online?
What is needed for your club?
WordPress, your registrar’s offer or Blogger for your club? Forget about those three. I’m not here to promote any particular offer and I won’t be listing any signup pages here.
The purpose is to show that there are other ways to proceed. Instead of thinking “how to” and “how much”, let’s think with “where to go” and “how to proceed to do it quickly”.
AS EASY AS 1-2-3
First: you need a name
Since you are a club, you need a domain name ending in “.club”. This domain name will soon be one of the possible choices during the registration phase at Google Apps for Work so don’t skip this part because:
This is what defines your identity: you are a club and you want to look like a club online;
the domain name is the first representation of the trademark on the Internet, so if your club name is trademarked, remember that the “.club” extension will add credibility to it. Regarding trademarks, it is strongly recommended that you register with Trademark Clearing House to monitor for possible future violations;
it’s one of the first things your readers will see when they find your website in a search engine;
it will pop and catch the eye on your business cards;
as a club – again – it’s much cooler to use a domain name ending in “.club” instead of “.com”.
Second: you need a CMS
CMS stands for “content management system”. This is your publishing platform yet to come: you’ll write your content on its back-end and it will be published on its front-end.
What we can see on the front end is what appears when someone types in your domain name ending in “.club”. Google Sites is a good choice: it comes with Google Apps for Work and allows you to set up your email ending in “.club”. Soon you may even find it in Google domains directly.
Third: you need a club template
Here’s where it gets interesting: There are many solutions for creating a website online, but the one with Google Sites allows you to choose templates during the process of creating your first website.
I want to remind you that many allow offers and this, but Google Sites has an option titled “View Gallery for More” and guess what: of the seven template libraries offered, one is titled “Clubs and organizations“. Some are ugly, but… many are quite nice, and I have no doubt that you can build your first club online with one of them.
What can’t you read here?
The downside of this offer is that Google neither promotes it nor promotes other interesting options such as search engine optimization.
Clubs deserve the chance to know that it is possible to set up a club online in such a quick and efficient way. In terms of SEO, I have been using Google Sites for years and my website is already well indexed.
I prefer the football club template, it has everything: site design, calendar, etc… Check it out.
