The difference between lotto and lottery
What is the difference between lotto and lottery? Let’s start with the definitions of both:
The Lottery – A random draw with a prize going to the winner.
The lottery – a random drawing with a prize that goes to the winner.
Do these definitions sound similar? Yes, they are actually exactly the same. There is really no difference between the lotto and the lottery.
Why then are there two different words for the same thing? They are synonyms. Many different words in the English language have synonyms. Synonyms are different words with exactly the same meaning.
Now, depending on where in the world you live, one of the two words will be more common than the other. And there may not even be a real reason to use one word over another. It might just be how it developed. Although lotteries have been around for thousands of years, the modern lottery as we know it today has only been around for less than half a century. So, depending on where in the world you live, you will be talking about the term that has been used for the last few dozen years.
In North America, including Canada and the United States, it is more common to call it a lottery. No matter what the game is, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Cash 5, Lottario, Keno, or any other game for that matter, it is often referred to as a lottery.
Elsewhere in the world, the word lotto is more common, especially in Europe. Let’s take Germany for example. In Germany, the most popular game is Lotto 6aus49. In Italy it would be SuperenaLotto. It doesn’t matter what you call it, though, because it’s the same thing, a synonym.
In some countries that call the game lotto, it may even be spelled differently. Sometimes spelled with just one “L.” Again, it doesn’t matter how you spell it because it’s still the same thing.
But no matter where you are in the world, this is a game where numbers are drawn randomly and the winner is the person who has a ticket that matches all the numbers drawn. Some lotteries draw the numbers live, often on television, while others do not. The game is usually run by the state or the state, and the proceeds usually go to good causes that help the community, such as building schools or hospitals.
