The Importance of the Client Consultation Process in Home Massage Training Courses
The importance of the client consultation process should be evident in any home massage training courses you evaluate. When working as a holistic therapist, it is very important to consult with the client before performing a treatment.
If this is their first visit, you will need to conduct a customer consultation with them. The client consultation helps you determine why the client came to see you. It helps you assess any health problems they may have, whether emotional or physical. This will help you formulate a treatment plan to relieve the client’s symptoms.
Customer consultation information should include:-
- Personal data
- Medical history
- Contraindications
- Customer Lifestyle
- Treatment record
When consulting with clients, we look for contraindications to treatment. Contraindications are health conditions the client may have that mean you should be careful or possibly avoid working on an area of the body. In more extreme cases, you may need to avoid treatment altogether.
It is important to inform the customer about this, e.g. “I’ll just go over the consultation form with you. The reason we ask these questions is to determine that it is safe to continue, is to determine that it is safe to continue treatment. We are looking for health conditions this means we may need to change treatment or we may need to get permission from a doctor before we can proceed All information you provide to me is personal and confidential and will only be used to determine whether it is safe to continue treatment. “
It is important to check with your insurance company to determine which contraindications they require you to check, the list of contraindications may be different for each insurer. If you do not check their list of contraindications, then you may find that you are not covered if a customer files a claim against you.
Make sure you and the client sign the consultation form to indicate that this is a true statement about the client’s health.
If the customer is a regular, ask them to check the consultation form they have completed and inform you of any changes. Once you have determined it is safe to proceed with the treatment, take the client to the treatment area and administer the treatment. After the treatment, you should evaluate the treatment, make notes of any observations you made during the treatment, and give the client aftercare advice.
When evaluating treatment:
- Ask the client if they liked the treatment, if not, why not.
- Ask them what they liked best and take notes, will you be able to change their next treatment and do more of what they liked best?
- Was there anything they didn’t like, if there was, then again you can change the next treatment and skip what they didn’t like?
- Was the pressure okay, again this allows you to modify your next treatment to suit your client’s needs?
- Write their response on the follow-up form, along with any problem areas you found while performing the treatment. It is important to record this information as it is your record of treatment and you can use this information in the unlikely event that you are sued. Just be prepared.
Consulting with clients is a very important part of being a professional holistic therapist. They protect both the customer and you. They make sure that you are not treating a client that could harm their well-being and in the unlikely event that a client makes an insurance claim against you, it shows that you have taken all the necessary steps and shows the health information that your client is said, and it was this information that you used to decide to continue treatment.
