The purpose of the T-square in your birth chart
One of the most common aspect patterns found in a birth chart is known as a “T-square” or “T cross”. This is formed by an opposition and two square aspects, which creates a red triangle. Red warns us that this figure is full of energy, and the triangle has a creative dynamic motivation. In astrology/psychology, this aspect pattern is called the “triangle of effectiveness.” However, from my own experience with clients and from having one in my own chart, one goes through a lot of frustration before this figure can be used effectively! However, this may be his purpose and intention.
Giving the motivational opposition of Saturn and the square of Mars; it’s no wonder this figure can really be disappointing. Red aspects “do energy” and this triangle gives a person a huge inner drive of self-motivation to achieve and get things done. We often have nothing to show for our efforts or the results are disappointing. This can discourage and dishearten us. However, it can create the change, or at least the awareness, that we need.
The focal planet
The focal planet is the apex of the trine. This is a tension point where stress can be experienced. However, it can provide motivation to further develop the planet’s energy, for example by developing a new talent or strengthening a specific characteristic. The house it is in is the area of life where it is released and expressed. This will create challenges for the individual both because of the squares and because of the pressure from the opposition. The opposite sign on the planet’s cusp may indicate an area of vulnerability; however, this can be overcome by developing the qualities of the opposite sign.
Finding his purpose
We should always look at the signs, planets and houses involved in evaluating each aspect in our charts. However, since I want to draw attention to the purpose of the aspect, looking at the cardinal, fixed, or variable modes of your T-square can give you some clues.
Cardinal
The T-square has an innate cardinal energy. These planets cannot remain dormant. The energies involved are forced to be used and developed. If this combination is in the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, then this drive will be doubly active. Those with this T-square may tend to go after what they want. It gives a lot of vitality, drive and confidence. This can cause us to be on the go, busy, or where we may appear to be in a hurry. There can also be a tendency to overdo things, trying to achieve too much too soon, especially if an Aries is involved. If you have this type of pattern in your chart, you may need to learn how to structure the energy by using it more constructively. Perhaps learning patience, compromise and evaluating your actions will help turn this energy into effectiveness.
Fixed T-square
A T-square in the fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius would give a person strong determination, will power as well as tenacity. Since fixed signs are about values and security, those with this aspect pattern would cling to anything that makes them feel secure. The drive to keep everything they own can be a powerful trait. Persistence in pursuing their goals can make them seem ruthless at times. Repressed feelings and holding on to hurtful and negative emotions can cause stress and illness. Something will have to give with this T-square, and it can be the focal planet when the energy is released or explodes. Driven by their security needs and the frustration they can cause, this facet pattern can force them to re-examine their values. When you work effectively, this energy can be used to build something stable and secure in one’s life.
The variable T-square
Mutable signs Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces tend to collect knowledge that is usually eagerly passed on to others. In this aspect pattern, their minds can be in constant fluctuation, seeking and gathering information from everywhere. A restless mind that actively seeks new stimulation as boredom can easily set in. The nervous system may be affected, making them very tense. Although flexibility and adaptability can be an asset, used negatively, they can lack direction, be very indecisive and appear unreliable to others. What could benefit this T-square is actually finding a subject or cause that can absorb all that mental energy. A mental challenge that will focus the mind. Finding the right channel will bring more discipline to this shifting energy.
Here’s a vital clue
This applies to all T-squares. Look at the opposite sign from the cusp planet, the one not involved in the aspect pattern. Developing the attributes and qualities of this sign can help to use this model more “effectively”. This may also be the intention of this aspect, as the development of the opposite number balances the psyche. This missing sign is worth exploring
Having a T-square in the birth chart can give a person dynamic energy. Each of the various modes of Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable will need to find suitable channels before this becomes a ‘triangle of efficiency’.
