Why use a king size bed skirt on a king size mattress?
Sometimes we are short on available clean bed skirts so we are forced to use a king size on a queen size mattress. Can we adjust it to fit a queen size mattress? With a little creativity we can. That is, without the use of scissors and needles.
A queen mattress measures 60 by 80 inches, while a king size bed measures 78 by 80 inches. To eliminate excess width, the bed skirt will need to be tucked between the mattress and the box spring. How about the excess skirt? Gather the excess and secure it to the box spring.
While a king bed skirt can be adjusted to fit a queen mattress, how it looks is another matter. It may not be attractive if it is tight around the spring, especially if it is a solid color.
This is the problem one has to face to use a king size bed skirt on a king size mattress. This is the difficulty with the type of deck that is one piece with a decking fabric secured under the mattress. This also applies to the issue of the bed frame and mattress height for the skirt falling.
The saying that for every problem there is always a solution is true. Today, bed skirts come in three separate panels, one panel for each side of the bed. One will find it easy to adjust the fall of the skirt without having to remove the mattress to fit it. They come with pins that allow the skirt panel to be placed between the box spring and the mattress. Adjust the height and then fasten it. This type is easy to remove but is not as stable as the other type of construction as it may lose its proper placement.
Older styles usually come in 14″ or 16″ heights, which is often too long or too short, given that there is no standard mattress and bed frame height. Actually the bed skirt is not adjustable as it comes in one piece. To remove it, the mattress must first be lifted, which is however very cumbersome, very stable, as it will not lose its place.
How to put the skirt on a big bed with a big mattress is quite awkward and not easy. One will need scissors, thread, and a sewing machine, that is, if one wants to permanently convert it to fit a queen-size mattress. There is a need to pull the excess in the center of the spring box, creating a fold down the center length until it fits. Next, sew along the center fold and then cut the excess fabric from the newly sewn seam. For sure, the newly renovated bedding will not look as elegant as it should. Why bother using a king size bed skirt on a queen mattress when you can then use bedspread which reaches the floor?
